About AKEBONO INTERNATIONAL Kagurazaka Office

The history of AKEBONO INTERNATIONAL Kagurazaka Office spans over 90 years, and includes its founding as YASUHARA PATENT OFFICE in 1929 and reorganization into YASUHARA LAW & PATENT OFFICE in 1951. OLINASU ASSOCIATES was spun off from the law firm and established as an IP firm with highly experienced patent and trademark attorneys in October 2008. On November 1, 2022, OLINASU ASSOCIATES was renamed AKEBONO INTERNATIONAL Kagurazaka Office in order to reinforce our connection with AKEBONO INTERNATIONAL, an IP firm located in Shinjuku, Tokyo that has been working on patent and design registration on behalf of its clients since April 1992, as well as to leverage this enhanced level of cooperation in providing an even better level of service to our clients.

Masayoshi YASUHARA

In addition to his core work as a patent attorney, Masayoshi also advises clients on filing strategies and infringements for trademarks, patents, and designs, unfair competition, and other matters. He is one of the few patent attorneys in Japan with a wide range of experience in litigating cases of unfair competition, as well as those related to trademarks and patents.

After graduating from Waseda University with a bachelor’s degree in law in 1975, Masayoshi joined YASUHARA LAW & PATENT OFFICE as an assistant to patent attorneys and attorneys-at-law, becoming qualified as a patent attorney in 1980.

Masayoshi also held the position of Deputy Director General of the Central Research Institute of Intellectual Property, an affiliated organization of the Japan Patent Attorneys Association (JPAA), for a total of 10 years. He was also an executive member of the board at several associations, including the Japan Trademark Association (JTA) (2003 to 2010), the Japan Association of Industrial Property Law (2006 to 2021), and the Copyright Law Association of Japan (2014 to 2018).

In addition, he is the author of several theses on IP rights and a co-author of several books, such as Various Issues on Intellectual Property (1996) and Commentary on Court Decisions in Trademark, Design and Unfair Competition Cases (2007).

Dr. Ikuko OHNISHI

Doctor of Business Law (Hitotsubashi University)
Registered as Patent Attorney in 1996 (specializing in trademarks)

Ikuko focuses on trademark-related matters including trademark searches, preparing and filing trademark applications and other trademark prosecution work, trademark dispute resolution, unfair competition relating to marks including trade names, and domain names.

Ikuko graduated from Kwansei Gakuin University with a bachelor’s degree in literature. After working for one of the leading patent firms in Osaka as a secretary and assistant to a trademark attorney, she became qualified as a patent attorney in 1996. Since then, she has been acting on behalf of many domestic and overseas clients as a patent attorney specializing in trademarks.

Ikuko obtained her doctorate degree in Business Law from Hitotsubashi University in 2010. Her doctoral dissertation was on trademark use. She is also a co-author of several theses and commentaries, including “Trademark Registrant’s Rights and Theory for Trademark Functions” (2004, with Prof. Kazufumi DOHI), Trademark Commentary (edited by Dr. Shoen ONO, 2005 and 2016), and Commentary on Court Decisions in Trademark, Design and Unfair Competition Cases (edited by Prof. Shigeki CHAEN et al., 2020). In addition, she translated Dr. Christopher Heath’s work entitled “The Protection of Aesthetic Creations as Three-Dimensional Marks, Designs, Copyright or under Unfair Competition Prevention Law” in Contemporary Issues in the Design Act and Its Peripheral Regulation (2005, ) from English to Japanese.

As of November 2022, she is a member of several associations, including the Japan Association of Industrial Property Law, the Copyright Law Association of Japan, the Japan Trademark Association (JTA) (executive member of the board), the International Trademark Association (INTA), and the Asian Patent Attorneys Association (APAA).

In addition, she was previously a researcher at the Central Research Institute of Intellectual Property, an affiliated organization of the Japan Patent Attorneys Association (JPAA), for several years, as well as a member of the (April 2016 to March 2020).
